Scope of Work

Global Maritime provided technical support to Cadeler through their successful tender process, following which a comprehensive jack-up site appraisal was conducted for the Baltyk II and III Offshore Wind Farms, focusing on soil condition categorization and geohazard assessment to support operations of the Cadeler O-Class Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV).

Detailed leg penetration assessments were performed for 100 planned wind turbine generator (WTG) locations using Global Maritime’s in-house software, GM Jugga, which is fully compliant with ISO 19905-1 standard. These assessments covered both the Cadeler O-Class and P-Class WTIVs at each individual location. Global Maritime also assisted the Client with vessel selection optimisation, based on operational risks.

Additionally, Finite Element Analyses (FEA) and leg extraction assessments were carried out for the Cadeler P-Class WTIV at four nominated locations where deep spudcan penetrations were anticipated, to evaluate risks related to leg recovery.

Challenges

Scope management was key to ensure Cadeler received information they required for tender purposes, without significant expenditure.

The Baltyk II and III Offshore Wind Farm sites exhibited complex ground conditions, characterised by multi-layered soils with highly variable geotechnical properties.

These conditions posed several key challenges for jack-up operations, including:

  • Very deep leg penetrations, exceeding 20 meters in some locations, leading to significant extraction concerns.
  • High punch-through risk at multiple locations.
  • Scour-related hazards, with associated scour or Punch Through scour-induced risks
Outcome – Results and Deliverables

In-depth interpretation of ground investigation data enabled a robust and detailed site appraisal, supporting the client in identifying geohazards and managing technically challenging locations across the Baltyk II and III Offshore Wind Farm sites. A comprehensive and structured summary table was provided, consolidating key findings, risk factors, and recommendations for each location. This was complemented by detailed individual location analyses to ensure all site-specific aspects were addressed.

The appraisal played a critical role in facilitating more effective planning of site visits and in guiding the selection of the most suitable Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV) for each location.
