Scope of work

As part of the project, a high-level mooring analysis was conducted to estimate anchor loads for floating wind farm systems. The analysis was carried out for five distinct locations across the UK, encompassing a wide range of water depths from 80 meters to 1,400 meters. The key outcomes was the assessment of viable options for mooring and anchoring for floating offshore wind.

Challenges

The challenges posed by limited data availability, as well as the absence of specific floater and Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) models and site-specific metocean data, were systematically addressed through a structured approach. To overcome the lack of metocean data, appropriate datasets for the five offshore sites were identified using our in-house database. This was complemented by a sensitivity analysis, comparing in-house data with publicly available domain datasets to validate accuracy and reliability. Mooring system configurations were also rigorously modeled, with different design parameters evaluated to optimize performance. By iteratively modifying key parameters of the floater models, the best mooring configurations were identified to ensure structural stability and operational efficiency. This comprehensive process ensured the delivery of robust, site-specific solutions tailored to the unique challenges of each offshore location.

Outcome – Results and Deliverables

Our methodology is well suited for application during the early stages of offshore wind projects, where detailed data on floaters and Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) models may be unavailable or pending selection. By employing this approach, developers gain access to robust and credible assessments that facilitate informed decision-making, particularly in evaluating the feasibility of early concepts or initial development phases. The results from this study highlight the capability of the adopted methodologies to produce realistic and reliable outcomes. The methodology offers developers a versatile and practical tool to support a range of key activities. These include the development of strategic project plans, the evaluation of technical and commercial proposals from EPC contractors, and the exploration of innovative and advanced mooring solutions. By enabling comprehensive early-stage analysis, this methodology supports developers in optimizing project strategies, mitigating risks, and advancing technical innovations in offshore wind development.
