Tidal Action
– Hanwha Ocean Co.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the exceptional support and technical expertise demonstrated throughout the re-activation of the drillship “Tidal Action” and the successful completion of the Closed Ring DP FMEA to achieve EHS-E notation.

Your team’s deep understanding of the system architecture and proactive collaboration were key to overcoming the challenges associated with converting the vessel from open bus to closed ring operation. We especially appreciated your prompt and professional responses to all technical inquiries, as well as your close coordination with ABB, KM, and the Brazilian operator “Constellation,” which greatly contributed to the smooth execution of the proving trials.

The live testing—including short circuit, earth fault, and arc detection protection—was conducted with precision and care, and the resulting documentation met the highest industry standards (IMCA, MTS, OCIMF), receiving full approval from the Classification Society.

We would also like to highlight that the Hanwha Ocean Commissioning Team expressed their appreciation for your team’s competence, responsiveness, and collaborative spirit during the trials in Korea. Your support was instrumental in ensuring the vessel’s timely mobilization to Brazil and the successful commencement of her charter.

Thank you once again for your valuable contribution. We look forward to continuing our partnership on future projects.

Challenges

The vessel had originally been designed for open bus operation, so the key challenges were:-

  • To identify the changes necessary to achieve Closed Ring EHS-E notation,
  • Review the proposed ABB and KM Test Procedures and agree a test procedure to minimize duplication and duration.
  • Witness the proving trials.
  • Witness Live short circuit testing.
  • Witness live earth Fault Testing.
  • Witness Live testing of Arc detection protection.
  • Responded to all requests from Brazilian operators, “Constellation” in order to clear any Petrobras concerns.

Outcome

Two surveyors attended the trials in Korea, and all tests were successfully carried out.  All documentation was produced for the vessel in accordance with the most recent industry standards including IMCA, MTS and OCIMF and was approved by the vessel’s Classification Society.  Following the trials, the vessel mobilized to Brazil and successfully commenced her charter.
